IT STARTS
In the first half of 2006, the board of the Polish foundation worked out a project for the securing of the building and the first steps of the restoration, both for the tower and for the hall nave, and submitted it as a justification document for the application for subsidies.
In many informative discussions and presentations of the project, and with the involvement of numerous personalities from the region, the parliament and the government, it was possible (as of August 2006) to acquire a total of 1 million zloty in funding. 152,000 zloty was earmarked for the tower restoration by the Zielona Gora Monuments Office and 850,000 zloty by the Polish Ministry of Culture for the hall nave.
Now the prerequisites for the public tender according to the legal regulations for construction and renovation services were given. Due to the relatively short time (Sept.-Nov. 2006) for the construction realisation, no company submitted a bid. Another call for tenders was also unsuccessful.
In order to use as much of the available funds as possible in 2006, talks were
held at the beginning of September
with appropriate companies to award contracts by private treaty
(max. 260,000 zloty plus 20%).
The WYKONAWCA company from Bielsko-Biala took on the task of
securing and renovating the tower.
At the beginning of October, the time had finally come and the company began work.
In order to give this historic event a worthy framework, the start of construction was officially announced on 8 October 2006 at 3 p.m. in a joint ecumenical event. In their speeches, the Bishop of Zielona Gora, the German pastors Aschenbrenner and Domke as well as the District Administrator of the Spree-Neisse District, Friese, paid tribute to this event.
From October to mid-December 2006, visible to the citizens of Guben and Gubin on a daily basis, the changes to the tower wreath and lantern became apparent.
At the same time, work was carried out on the prefabrication of the tower’s helmet.
This good state of work encouraged the initiators of the reconstruction to present the prefabricated helmet of the tower dome and the newly bricked lantern to the citizens of Guben and Gubin at an event on 3 December 2006. In the many conversations on the sidelines of the event, it became clear that many German and Polish citizens are willing to get actively involved in the reconstruction.
In 2006, 20,000.00 € were donated by the association for the tower renovation and were earmarked for the frame scaffolding, the dismantling of the lantern, the destroyed brick dome, the viewing bridge and the removal of the tree guarding at the crown of the tower.
The donations of the Friends secured about 20% of the financial requirements for the complete tower protection and the partial renovation of the tower.
At this point, the Friends would like to thank all donors and hopes for continued support in the coming years.
