The ruins of the town and main church in today’s Gubin are the defining, formative object in the townscape, no matter where visitors to the towns of Guben or Gubin come from. Nowhere else is destruction and at the same time a reminder of war brought so close to the visitor, but also to the population of the city in two countries.

In the more than 60 years since the destruction of this historically valuable European cultural monument, several attempts have been made on the Polish side to rebuild this structure.

Due to the situation under international law on the Oder-Neisse border until 1990, but especially due to the former communist government of Poland, no interest was shown in the reconstruction project.

Only with the political changes in Eastern Europe and Poland’s accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004 does this reconstruction work have a chance.
